The Oconee Wine Club
Summer is right around the corner!
May is an exciting month here at the lake.
This Sunday May 14th is Mothers Day and of course
one of the biggest weekends of the year is Memorial Day Weekend (May
27th-May 29th).
If you are struggling to find something for Mom, don’t forget
The Oconee Cellar makes some of the best wine gift baskets in the
business! I am planning
on having the wine tasting on Thursday May 25th. I will send more information later in the week.
Our new summer hours will start in May.
We will be open on Friday and Saturday from 10:00 am until 9:00
pm. (M-Th 10:00-7:00)
This month I decided to mix it up
a bit and choose wines from two different wineries.
The red for this month, Ninth Island Pinot Noir 2004, comes
from an Australian winery called Kreglinger.
Kreglinger, founded in 1797 by brothers George and Christian
Kreglinger is a family company, which holds registration number one
recorded in Antwerp. The
family's group of companies extended to Australia, establishing
Kreglinger Australia in 1893. Kreglinger
Wine Estates, the producers of the internationally acclaimed Pipers
Brook Vineyard, Ninth Island and Kreglinger wines has a history that
encompasses over 30 years as a modern pioneer and leader of the
Tasmanian fine wine industry.
This wine received an 88 rating from Wine Spectator and
was described as, “Bright, juicy and
lively with raspberry, light cherry and floral aromas and flavors that
remain refreshing and appealing through the fine-grained finish. Drink
now through 2009. 2,000 cases imported. (HS)
A great warm weather red that goes great with grilled salmon. Retail
$19.99
The
white for this month comes from a New Zealand winery called Tohu. Situated
in New Zealand's premier wine growing regions, Tohu Wines are superb
examples of varietal excellence with a unique, distinct appeal.
The people of Wakatu Incorporation, Ngati Rarua Atiawa Iwi
Trust and Wi Pere Trust have shared ancient traditions of
spirituality and harmony with the land. They strive to produce
quality wines that establish their reputation as benevolent
nurturers of the land and all it provides.
Tohu Wines is the first indigenous branded wine to be
produced for the export market. This
lively, zingy style fairly jumps out of the glass with its stony
lime and guava flavors, hinting at quince as the finish lingers on
and on. Drink now. 35,000 cases made. This
wine received a 90 rating by Wine Spectator and was put in the Smart
Buy category. Retail $14.99
